My name is Mark Carney and I am the Japanese instructor at White Station Middle School. I began teaching Japanese here from July of 2017. Previously I lived and worked in Fukushima, Japan from 2006 to 2017 teaching English in Japanese public elementary schools.
Before studying Japanese in University while growing up in Memphis, I envisioned a fairly normal life path and could not envision myself living or working abroad. My decision to study Japanese while in University opened up many new options that led me to places I could never have expected. Some of those experiences were undeniably positive. Others, like living through the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 in Fukushima were more difficult to deal with.
All of my experiences living in Japan have led me eventually back to my hometown of Memphis, where I am now teaching Japanese. It is my goal to help learners understand how language study may not seem relevant now can have a profound impact on your life and provide for opportunities you otherwise may not have access to.
